| At 27 weeks, approximately 87% of babies born will survive.
However, babies born at this age require intensive care and have an increased risk of developmental delays and chronic health conditions. |
Your Baby
By this time your baby has a pretty good chance of surviving outside the womb. The eyes open and the retina form different layers which can sense light levels and send messages to the brain. Also, the once smooth surface of the brain starts to form grooves and indentations.
You
You're on the threshold of your third trimester! And if it seems like you're getting bigger by the minute, well, you are. In the third trimester you'll gain an average of 1 pound a week.
You may also notice some shortness of breath over the next few weeks. Your expanding uterus is now pushing against your organs and decreasing your lung capacity. This is normal--your baby is still getting the oxygen he/she needs--and should subside toward the end of your pregnancy. To ease your breathing, take deep, long breaths; maintain good posture so your lungs have room to expand; use an extra pillow, and try sleeping on your side to breathe easier at night.
If, however, you develop shortness of breath that is sudden or severe, along with chest pain or rapid pulse rapid, contact your doctor immediately.
