Week 5 of Your Pregnancy |

Size: .05 inches

| At this point your baby looks like a tiny tadpole. The heart
has begun to beat and the brain and spinal cord have started to
form. |
Your Baby
This is a week of crucial wiring when the placenta and umbilical cord hook up to Mom. Your baby's heart--about the size of a poppy seed--starts beating.
You
Did you just miss your period? If so, it’s time to break out that home pregnancy test. Those telltale levels of the pregnancy hormone, Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG), are most likely high enough now to detect in your urine.
You may also begin feeling some of the classic symptoms of early pregnancy: fatigue, sore (enlarged) breasts, aching back, nausea, and mood swings. Take it easy on yourself; make sure you get enough rest, continue to eat healthy, and take your prenatal vitamins. Your body is working overtime to help your baby develop, so it’s time for some VIP treatment.
You may also want to schedule a doctor’s appointment to confirm your pregnancy. In the office, the doctor may give a blood test, which can be more accurate than a home pregnancy test, and will get you on a schedule of regular office visits to make sure that your pregnancy is progressing as it should.
