The Literacy and Language Center offers highly personalized multi-sensory research based programs in a one-to-one setting to improve reading, spelling, writing, verbal expression, reading and listening comprehension, critical thinking skills and vocabulary. We work in a one-to-one supportive environment that promotes growth in skills, confidence and a feeling of safety that is not always available in a classroom or group learning environment. These programs are appropriate for ages 5 to adult and are an excellent approach for all learning styles and abilities. We are dedicated to helping each of our students realize their full potential for learning and life, while embracing their unique differences.
Why are we different from other services offered?
We use specific positive praise and the Socratic method of questioning when teaching. When a student provides an answer, we immediately point out a specific thing that they have done correctly and then we ask questions to either reinforce the correct concept or to discover the appropriate response rather than telling them. This language makes students aware of their processing and enables them to monitor their own responses, which develops independence in skill.
The Literacy and Language Center uses research based multi-sensory programs.
Multi-Sensory programs employ a combination of visual (what we see), auditory (what we hear) and kinesthetic-tactile (what we feel) cues simultaneously to teach concepts. Studies show clearly that hearing information, with simultaneous iconic visual input, is the most effective means of instructing. All of our programs are designed to involve more than one sense at a time to help students develop their skills and become independent.
During the summer we offer summer intensive programs customized to each student’s needs. If you have any further questions about our programs or the environment at our center, please feel free to call us at (415) 242-1205.
