Mr. Prickles: A Quill-Fated Love Story

Published: 01/31/2012 by Ronna Mandel in Book Nook

This year for Valentine’s Day the story selection is superb, with books about cupid, kisses, and hugs. But my favorite by far is about Mr. Prickles, a porcupine looking for friends in all the wrong places.

The Snowy Day was first published in 1962, during the height of America’s modern civil rights movement, and the innocent tale changed the landscape of American children’s literature.

Jim Weiss captures this period in time for us in a fascinating way, paying tribute to the women who served their country, some behind enemy lines, long before women could vote, let alone volunteer for the army.
