Your St. Patrick's Day IQ: Answer 5

Why is St. Patrick's Day celebrated on March 17th?

Answer: It is the day of his death

Though dates and details surrounding St. Patrick’s life are sketchy at best, it is believed that he died on March 17th. In celebration of the Emerald Isle’s patron saint, monasteries and churches in Ireland were, as early as the 9th century, directed to honor his memory by celebrating over the course of three days and three nights during mid-spring. Even better, all of the restrictions of Lent (a 40-day period where Christians prepare for Easter by fasting and giving up vices) could be cast aside for a day of merrymaking. Quite an honor, indeed! No wonder St. Patrick is so beloved.
