Turn Spring Cleaning Into Spring Cash

by Paul Vasquez

Spring cleaning isn't exactly fun, but it's got to be done. Make your spring cleaning process a little more interesting by turning last season's clothes and shoes into cash! Paul Vasquez, father of 4 and Director of Media Relations at, a coupon search site, shares his tips for making spring cleaning profitable.

Garage Sale/Consignment – Now that you have cleaned out the closet, what are you going to do with all of those excess items? Hosting a garage sale or taking your items to consignment is an excellent way to rid yourself of excess items and make extra cash. The money you gain from the garage sale can make for a fun night out with the family.

Make your own cleaning supplies – Cleaning supplies can be costly and toxic to your family and the environment. Creating your own cleaning supplies is a great way to be green while saving some green. Some easy to make concoctions are homemade glass cleaner which can be made with 1 cup of rubbing alcohol, 1 cup of water and tablespoon of vinegar and homemade furniture polish can be created with 1 cup of olive oil and ½ cup of lemon juice.

Take inventory – Taking an inventory of your pantry and freezer can prevent you from accidentally buying an item you already have the next time you are at the grocery store. When you review your pantry, realizing you have 4 bottles of ketchup will definitely deter you from purchasing any more.  Also, we all have items we completely forgot we had. Realizing you have pork chops in the freezer may save you a trip to the store altogether. If there are items you know your family will never eat or if you would just like to pare down to two bottles of ketchup, taking items to the local food pantry is a nice way to share the wealth.

Comparison Shop – There are many high-ticket items people typically purchase during the spring season. When looking to purchase items like barbecue grills, patio furniture or gardening supplies make sure to comparison shop online for the best possible deals. Websites like aggregate promotion codes and deals for companies like Sears, Target and K Mart to help you save the most money.

Cleaning your vents and filters – An often overlooked spring cleaning task is cleaning your air filters and dryer vents. Replacing your air conditioning filters once a month can help to limit the amount of pollen, dust and dander in your home that can upset allergies. Cleaning your dryer’s vents will help your dryer to run more efficiently cutting back on extra energy usage and also prevent lint fires from occurring in your home.
