Tips for Encouraging Young Poets

• Read poetry to your child. Include poetry as part of your reading repertoire – and don’t just stick to poems for children.

• Share with your child any poem you know by heart, perhaps one of the many you may have memorized when you were at school.

• Encourage your child to create poems about his feelings and his life. On special occasions, he can create poems for people as gifts.

• Celebrate what your child makes. Post her poems on the fridge. Kids who know that their writing matters will keep on creating.

• Buy poetry books for your child to match his interests. There are so many now, on almost every subject: baseball, basketball, rivers, friends, animals, etc.
