For the 13th straight year, Jacob is the most popular name for boys in the United States, and Sophia has moved up the list to claim the top spot for girls.
The Social Security Administration has released its annual list of most popular names, a record the agency has kept since 1880. That year, no surprise perhaps, John and Mary were the most popular names in America.
Isabella, which had been the most popular name for two years, dropped down to second place in 2011. Emma, Olivia and Ava completed the list of the top five. For boys, Mason jumped 10 spots to become the second most popular name for boys, followed by William, Jayden and Noah. Michael came in sixth, the lowest ranking for that classic name since 1948.
Briella and Brantley were the fastest rising names for girls and boys, followed by Angelique and Iker. Time will tell if they continue to catapult up the list.
