Sports Medicine Bible for Young Athletes, by Lyle J. Micheli, M.D. and Mark Jenkins, Sourcebooks Trade, 2001. This book aims to educate parents and coaches so they can have better programs with fewer problems. It provides a background on the organization of youth sports, goals, philosophy, possible injuries and their treatment.

Sports Medicine for Parents & Coaches, by Daniel J. Boyle, M.D., Georgetown University Press, 1999. Written by a family physician certified in sports medicine, this book focuses on preventing and treating sports-related injuries. It includes a glossary of medical terms, as well as illustrations of injuries and preventive exercises.

Sports Medicine for Young Athletes: A Guide for Parents, Teachers and Coaches, by the Institute for Athletic Medicine, edited by Scott Kulstad, Fairview Press, 1998. This guide includes emergency procedures, injury evaluation and prevention tips. There are also questions for your doctor, suggested readings and online resources.

The Young Athlete: A Sports Doctor’s Complete Guide for Parents, by Jordan D. Metzl, M.D., and Carol Shookhoff; Little, Brown & Co.; 2002. This guide aims to help parents keep kids participating in organized sports safe and healthy – physically, socially and psychologically. It explores essential issues, such as how to be a good sports parent and the hallmarks of good coaching.

Youth Sports Injuries, by John F. Duff, M.D., Collier Books, 1992. Written by a practicing orthosurgeon and the father of eight children, this book describes the most common sports-related injuries. It also includes a home-care guide for everyday sports injuries, as well as a glossary, suggested readings and resources.
