How to Ensure a Safe Camp Experience

Many parents have concerns about how camp counselors and other staff are screened for criminal records. In fact, this screening process varies from state to state, and there is no national database for this kind of information. A criminal conviction in California, for example, probably won’t come up in a check performed in Massachusetts.

Ask camp directors specifically about their screening process for hiring staff. Find out what the staff to camper ratio is and whether staff members are ever alone with a child for any specific camp activities.

As for safety and security in general, ask about the camp’s safety policies – everything from rules about swimming to how the campsite is monitored at night.
