Debbie Norris, vice president of human resources, believes that a top benefit is the flexible work schedule. “We have a lot of working parents. We allow flexible schedules so that they can participate in their children’s lives.” Some cut back hours during the summer months. The company also offers job-sharing and telecommuting for certain jobs.
Merrick & Company pays 82 percent of medical, dental and vision insurance for employees and families, and life insurance is paid at one times annual salary. Employees are eligible for the 401(k) immediately upon employment. Norris says, “We’re an employee-owned firm. When we have good years, the employees share in that success.” Paid maternity and paternity leave for newborns, adopted or foster children is 30 days beyond the basic FMLA requirement. A private lactation room is provided for new moms.
An annual wellness fair offers resources toward good lifestyle choices including nutrition and alternative medical options. Norris states, “We stress the benefits of wellness, as opposed to fixing problems later.” A fitness center is on-site, and the company sponsors Ride Your Bike to Work Day.
Norris continues, “We have a strong training program and tuition reimbursement up to $5,250 per year.” The company provides “Lunch and Learn” sessions, such as stress management and financial wellness.
