Bring Out the Artist in Your Child
With budget constraints forcing the closure of school art programs nationwide, it’s exciting to find a contest designed to reward both students and their teachers for pursuing art in the classroom. For the 10th year, arts supply manufacturer Sakura of America is holding its “Cray-Pas Wonderful, Colorful World Contest.”

The judging panel of professional artists and art educators selects three top finalists in three grade categories: kindergarten through second grade, third through fifth grade, and sixth through eighth grade. In addition to the recognition, winners will receive a variety of prizes, including U.S. Savings Bonds, Sakura products and gift certificates from participating sponsors. In addition, a randomly selected teacher who enters his or her students’ art will be rewarded a trip for two just for participating in the competition. This past year, Kim Shroeder, a teacher from Pine Grove, Pa., went all the way to Hawaii!

You can download entry forms or pick them up at Michael’s Arts and Craft Stores, and other retail sponsors. Entrants may submit artwork at any time up to Dec. 17, 2004. The contest is only open to teachers and their students, so be sure to let your child’s teacher know all about it!
