Teachers, parents and educators have long debated whether there is one surefire way to teach children how to read. The “Reading Wars” have raged in this country for nearly a century. The pendulum has swung from a strict adherence to phonics to the broader approach called “whole-language.” These days, though, many teachers advocate a combination of methods to teach reading, and they note that there really is no one way to teach literacy to all children.
