Pearls of Parenting Wisdom from Bill Cosby and Dr. Alvin Poussaint

Bill Cosby and Alvin Poussaint are adamant that good parenting doesn’t come innately to anyone.

Here are a few gems of advice for new parents from their book Come on People:

Real men change diapers. Diaper changing? That’s right, brother. It takes a real man to change a baby’s diaper. And as we dads have learned, when that baby is ours, the whole process doesn’t seem nasty at all – well, not too nasty anyway.

Protect the baby. Folklore warns us that you spoil babies if you pick them up too much when they cry. But we’ll go with what the pediatricians tell us. They say there is no such thing as “spoiling” a baby. If a baby is upset and gets no comfort, you can do harm.

Blocks are still cool. Playing with blocks and toys involves all the senses of a baby and young child – touch, smell, taste, vision and hearing. Even adults like to play with blocks. Try it.
