What's So Funny About Peace, Love and a Mohawk Haircut? How "Hipsters" Are Raising Kids Without Giving Up Their Own Edgy Pursuits
<< Part 2
By David Abels
Parents, Do No Harm
More traditional parents may contend that hipsters don't have their children's best interests at heart. Certainly, for every hip-but-protective parent, there's a Britney Spears driving her young child around unbelted in the front seat of a sports car. Or the "Roccer Mom," Ann Marie Ciarcia of New York, who attended a Ramones tribute at a nightclub with her teenage daughter and a friend, then drove them home while drunk and got into an accident that killed her daughter's friend. Ciarcia, who was sentenced to at least 16 months in prison, reportedly dubbed herself "Roccer Mom" on her MySpace page, where she detailed rediscovering her "punk rock roots after being bored in the burbs for years."
Pollack himself has caught some flack from the mainstream parenting world. In Alternadad, he recounts how his son was expelled from preschool for biting other kids. When he learned of a study that found American preschoolers were increasingly being expelled for behavior problems, Pollack decided that his son was part of a "genuine social problem" and wrote a column expressing the helplessness and guilt that he and his wife felt. The piece was picked up by Salon.com.
What resulted, Pollack writes, was an onslaught of comments via the blogosphere - with such scathing headlines as "Some People Just REALLY, Really Shouldn't Breed. Really." One blogger wrote, "This poor child isn't going to get any better unless his stupid, selfish parents get parenting lessons."
