Dad’s Role During Pregnancy & Childbirth

We all know that dads can play an important role in the birth of their babies. But figuring out exactly how they can support the mom-to-be during pregnancy and labor can be a challenge. Here are some helpful tips for expectant fathers from the March of Dimes Foundation:

View the pregnancy as something happening to both of you. Announce the pregnancy to other family members and close friends together.

Whenever possible, attend prenatal checkups with the mom-to-be. Undoubtedly, you have many questions, too. Be sure to discuss them with the health-care provider.

Choose the baby’s name together.

• Shop for baby items together.
This will make you feel more invested (literally and figuratively) in preparing for the baby’s arrival and also provide more bonding time for you and the mom over the impending birth.

Learn about the birthing process. Take childbirth classes. Read books and magazines on birth and baby care.

Make decisions together about the kind of labor and delivery you want.

• Be prepared for labor.
Be a coach, cheerleader and source of strength for your partner. If possible, stay overnight in the hospital room with the mom and baby for the first night or two.
