SCHOOL-AGE & OLDER

The Parent’s Guide to Eating Disorders, Second Edition

By Marcia Herrin, Ed.D., and Nancy Matsumoto; Gürze Books, 2007; www.gurze.com.

This well-written, informative and comprehensive book tackles a tough topic. The first half contains great information for parents about eating disorders: how to recognize them, talk about them, help your child avoid them and why parents shouldn't blame themselves if it happens. The second half presents a somewhat controversial approach in which the family takes a central role in helping their child recover at home, rather than in a hospital or residential eating disorders center. The authors present numerous examples from real families who have been successful. One NAPPA reviewer, anorexic at age 17, cautions parents to remain alert should their child need more intervention. Nonetheless, the approach has solid research behind it and the authors present it in a clear and accessible way.
