Jump into Literacy: Active Learning for Preschool Children

Written by a seasoned movement education consultant, this book contains lots of great tips, games and activities that focus on talking, moving and music. Expand children’s knowledge of adverbs by asking them to walk “lightly,” “quickly” or “crookedly.” Or have kids listen to music (classical, folk, etc.) and ask them how it makes them feel. Then ask them to move to that music. Demonstrate opposites by playing a fast piece first, then a slow one; sad music, followed by happy. When used in a classroom setting, teachers welcome the literacy objectives, materials list and the instruction and extension activities that accompany each game. Both parents and teachers find it a great resource for rainy days and a boost in preparing young kids for reading.
