| Meet the Judges The 2008 NAPPA Parenting Resources entries were judged by NAPPA’s team of specialty judges, veteran parenting editors, family testers and lead judge Lawrence J. Cohen, Ph.D. A former NAPPA winner himself (for his best-selling book Playful Parenting), Cohen is a licensed psychologist, author and nationally recognized speaker who specializes in children’s play and play therapy. This is his third year with NAPPA. Safety consultants included child injury-prevention specialists Erin Christiansen (Boston Public Health Commission), Mandi Summers and Magda Rodriguez (Safe Kids of Western Massachusetts) and Jon Freeman (Tufts-New England Medical Center). They led their teams in assessing the overall safety, stability and compliance of baby and toddler gear with national safety standards. Childproofing expert Tom Connolly (Safe Solutions of New England) focused on the installation and efficacy of injury-prevention products. Additional safety checks and product testing were provided by pediatrician Cheryl Tierney, M.D.; pediatric nurse Virginia Devlin, R.N.; staff at Westwood Family Chiropractic in Westwood, Mass.; and chiropractor Marty Abram, D.C., of Sharon, Mass. Other specialty judges included nutritionist Sheila Globus, a former associate editor of Prevention magazine; Bess Marcus, Ph.D., a professor and a lead fitness researcher at Brown University Medical School; birth doula Carolyn Ogren, co-chair of the 2007 DONA International Conference; lactation specialist Dot Norcross, IBCLC, principal of Lactation Care Inc. in Newton, Mass.; and maternity staff at Caritas Norwood Hospital in Norwood, Mass. Special needs professionals and advocates included early intervention specialist Denise Galford-Koeppel, M.S. Veteran Montessori teacher Carla Moore and her colleagues at Thatcher Montessori School in Milton, Mass., helped to evaluate educational resources. Last, but not least, dozens of family testers – some with medical and product-testing expertise – also played a key role in choosing this year’s Gold and Honors winners. |
