Everything Conceivable: How Assisted Reproduction Is Changing Our World

By Liza Mundy

Alfred A. Knopf, 2007; $26.95; www.randomhouse.com.
This book takes a sociological look at the impact that assisted reproduction is having on family structure, the number of multiple births and the impact on hospitals and schools, social justice and surrogacy, and how today’s technology may affect future generations. The author, an award-winning journalist for The Washington Post, reports scientific research along with interviews with doctors, families and children conceived through in vitro fertilization. It also presents a number of difficult ethical, moral and practical issues that those seeking fertility treatment will encounter. Note: This is not necessarily a book for those currently undergoing fertility treatments. It graphically describes some procedures and includes facts or experiences that may upset some readers.
