Any top 100 list can be both an eye opener and a catalyst to discussion and debate. The newly released Top 100 Kid Films from KIDS FIRST!, a program of the 17-year-old non-profit Coalition for Quality Children's Media, is certainly no exception.
The Top 100 Kid Films list - which features a wide array of titles ranging from animation, musicals and comedy to drama, action/adventure and fantasy films - includes age recommendations, plot summaries and commentary on what's exceptional about each title from KIDS FIRST! "The Top 100 Kid Films list is designed to give parents and educators a convenient and reliable way to offer their young viewers suggestions that are winners every time," Levy says. "Films such as these are a wonderful way to entertain but also teach children about other cultures and reinforce positive messages."
Any film KIDS FIRST! endorses must be free of gratuitous violence or abuse, inappropriate sexual behavior, and bias in terms of race, gender, culture or religion. They must show no condescension toward children or replicable unsafe behavior.
Chosen by the public through online voting from a list of more than 196 films selected by the KIDS FIRST! jury of more than 3,000 children and adults with backgrounds in education, child development and child-service professions, the final Top 100 list recognizes feature films with universal appeal. The films span more than 70 years of filmmaking and include well-known classics as well as newer gems.
